What is the difference between touchscreen and capacitive touch screen?

2024-12-11

Touchscreen is a broad concept, while Capacitive Touch Screen overlay is a specific type of touch screen. There are mainly the following differences between them.
1.Differences in how it works.
Touch screen
  • There are many types of touch screens, and their working principles are different. For example, resistive touch screen, which uses pressure to make the upper and lower layers of the screen contact, thereby changing the resistance value of the circuit to detect the touch position. When an object presses the screen, the two layers of film are turned on at the pressing point, and the controller determines the coordinates of the touch point by detecting the change in current.
  • There is also an infrared touch screen, which is to install infrared transmitting and receiving devices around the screen, when there is an object blocking the infrared, with the help of the operation and processing of the position of the blocked infrared rays, so as to clarify the location of the touch point.
Capacitive touch display
  • The working principle of capacitive touch screens is based on the current induction of the human body. Its surface has a transparent conductive material coating, and when the finger touches the screen, due to the presence of the human body's electric field, the finger and the touch screen surface form a coupling capacitance. The screen controller is able to detect the position of the touch point because the capacitance value changes. This kind of touch screen has certain requirements for touching objects, and usually requires conductive objects, such as fingers, to effectively trigger touch operations.
2.The difference in the touch experience.
Touch screen (resistive type as an example)
  • Due to the upper and lower layers of film, the resistive touch screen is prone to film wear and scratch when used for a long time or under great pressure. Once the film is damaged, it will affect the normal use of the touch screen.
  • And if there is liquid inside the screen, it may cause a short circuit between the upper and lower layers of film, which will damage the touch screen.
Capacitive touch screen
  • Capacitive touch screen is relatively durable. Its surface is generally relatively strong and not easily scratched. And for small amounts of liquid contact, it is usually not as prone to short circuits as resistive touch screens. However, the capacitive touch screen may also be damaged if it is hit by a large external force.

3.The difference in cost
Touch screen (resistive type as an example)
  • Resistive touch screens are relatively low in terms of production costs. Its technology is relatively simple, mainly composed of two thin films with conductive coatings and some simple circuits, so it has an advantage in price, and is generally used for some equipment that is sensitive to cost and does not require particularly high touch accuracy.
Capacitive touch screen
  • The production cost of capacitive touch screen is higher. This is because it requires more complex manufacturing processes, including high-precision conductive material coatings and sensitive capacitance detection circuits. Therefore, it is generally used in mid-to-high-end electronic devices, which have high requirements for user experience and touch accuracy.
capacitive touch screen
Touch screens are a broad category that contains many different principles of touch screens, and capacitive touch screens are one of the advanced touch technologies. They all differ from each other in terms of how they work, touch experience, durability, and cost. When choosing a touch screen device, it is necessary to consider the specific use scenario, the requirements for touch accuracy, the cost and other factors to determine the most suitable touch screen type.
