What is the SMT process of PCBA?

2024-11-20

1.The association of SMT profile with infrared PCBA
  • SMT (Surface-mount Technology), namely Surface Mount Technology, is the most popular technology and process in the electronic assembly industry. It plays a crucial role in the PCB (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) manufacturing process. In simple terms, PCBA is a component that installs various electronic components on a printed circuit board (PCB), and SMT is the key process to realize this installation.
2.The main process of SMT in PCBA

Solder paste printer

  • This is the first step in the SMT process and is like building a "foundation" for PCBA. First, the PCB is fixed on the workbench of the printing press. Then, the solder paste (a paste of alloy powder and flux) is printed through a steel mesh (a thin sheet with a specific opening pattern) to the PCB where the components need to be soldered. This process requires precise control of the amount of solder paste and the printing position, much as a painter applies paint to a canvas with precision. If the amount of solder paste is too large, there may be problems such as short circuit in the subsequent welding process; Too little solder paste may lead to weak soldering.

Component mount

  • After the solder paste printing is completed, it enters the exciting component mounting phase, which is the stage where the PCBA begins to "add bricks and mortar". The Mount machine, which is like a super flexible "elf", can take out various Surface mount components (SMD) from the material belt or material plate with high speed and accuracy, and accurately mount to the solder paste printed on the PCB pad position. These components vary in size from tiny chips to slightly larger capacitors, resistors, and so on. The placement machine works with extreme precision, ensuring that each component is installed exactly where it should be, with the smallest margin of error, in the same way that construction workers place each unique piece of masonry precisely in a building structure.

Reflow soldering

  • When the components are mounted on the PCB accurately, it will usher in the "welding test" - reflow welding. This process is like a "high temperature baptism" for the PCBA, so that the solder paste melts at high temperature, so as to solder the pins of the components and the pads on the PCB firmly together. In a reflow welder, the temperature will gradually increase and decrease according to a preset curve. When the temperature rises to the melting point of the solder paste, the solder paste will become liquid, and under the action of surface tension, it will fill the gap between the pin of the component and the pad, forming a good electrical connection. When the temperature drops, the solder paste resolidification, components are firmly fixed on the PCB, like metal parts after high temperature forging, connected tightly and firmly.

   3.Inspection and repair

  • After the first few processes, PCBA has been preliminarily formed, but it cannot be "taken lightly". This is followed by rigorous testing, which is like a "full body exam" for PCBA. Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) can check whether the mounting position of components is correct, whether there are missing components, whether solder paste welding is good, and other possible problems. If a defective PCBA is found, it needs to be repaired. Repair is like "curing" a sick PCBA. Technicians will use special tools and equipment to repair the faulty parts, such as re-soldering bad solder joints or replacing damaged components, to ensure that each PCBA can meet the quality standards before it can go to the next production link or be delivered to the customer.

4.All in all, SMT technology is a precise and complex system in the production process of PCBA. From the foundation construction of solder paste printing, to the careful layout of components mounting, to the key fusion of reflow welding, and the final detection and repair support, each link is closely connected and interlinked. The precise implementation and effective connection of each link can ensure the high-quality output of PCB, meet the strict requirements of electronic products for performance, stability and reliability, so as to promote the continuous development of the entire electronics industry, and lay a solid foundation for the birth of many high-tech electronic products.
